hi boys and girls, this week's video is going to be, a snowy mitten picture, and for this you're going to need paper, and some crayons and markers, a pencil and, we are going to start by turning our, paper, vertical so the short sides are at the, top and bottom and, we're going to sort of trace around our, hand but what we're really drawing is a, mitten, so i'm gonna put all four fingers, together but let my thumb stick out, and i'm just gonna kind of loosely trace, around my hand and by loosely i mean i'm, not really touching, the edges of my hand and you can see it, kind of drew a mitten shape in there, and i'm going to go ahead and draw my, wrist, and then add a line down here where, the end of the mitten would be so, then i'm going to turn my paper back, kind of horizontal, and i'm going to use crayon, to outline my mitten but then i'm also, going to use crayons to, draw some lines across my mitten and, then patterns as well, so for this part you can really use any, colors you'd like, i'm going to start by tracing the, outside edges of my mitten, and then inside here i'm going to draw, some lines and you can use different, colors for this, that kind of go all the way across, you can make a pattern or you can do, random colors, rainbow colors it's really, up to you what kind of color scheme, you want to have on your mitten, all right so next i'm going to add some, patterns, inside my mitten so a great way to start, would be to kind of draw some dividing, lines so you could do something like, zigzag lines, vertical or horizontal lines bumpy lines, and i'm going to kind of use different, colors here, and just dividing this space up you can, definitely add, more than one pattern so for example i, could, here add zig zag lines to break it up, into triangles, but then inside the triangles i could, add additional shapes or patterns, to make my pattern more interesting, and we are going to want to color all of, these patterns in, eventually so you could color as you go, or you can outline like i'm doing and, then go back and color, and the nice thing about outlining it is, you can see i'm kind of reusing the same, four colors, um but then when i'm finished i'm gonna, go back through, and add a couple more colors in here, [Applause], right now i'm just going to finish, drawing my patterns, try experimenting with different lines, different shapes, all right so once we finish drawing our, different, patterns i'm going to go through and, color them, and we actually want to color in the, entire, mitten so don't leave any white paper, showing through, now i'm going to use just a few select, colors, but you could certainly use more colors, you could use the whole rainbow, or you could just pick you know five or, six, crayons that you really like and just, reuse those colors again and again, i like on this project having the, outlines of my shapes, be a different color than the fill, i think it looks kind of neat, so, all right now that i have my entire, mitten filled in with crayon i'm going, to start working on the background, and for the background i want to start, with a white crayon, first and i'm going to draw, snowflakes now there's a few ways you, could draw snowflakes, you could draw crossing crisscrossing, lines to make, realistic looking snowflakes or you, could just draw large, circles and fill them in with the crayon, the trick on this background, is that whatever you decide to do, circles, realistic snowflakes or a combination, you want to make sure that you push, really hard with the crayon, and if you are drawing circles fill them, in, completely because the next step is, going to be, doing kind of a watercolor, type background using markers and water, and this white crayon, won't show up unless you really press, down hard with it, so i'm going to do a combination i'm, going to draw some, actual snowflakes in here and i'm, basically just drawing a big x within a, smaller x kind of criss-crossing through, and obviously you won't be able to see, it very well, but on your paper you should be able to, kind of see, the difference between the white paper, and the white crayon, just a little if you're drawing really, dark especially, if you're near a window kind of where, the sun is shining on your paper, and so i'm just going to go through make, sure i kind of have, snowflakes all over i, didn't leave any super big empty places, and then i'm gonna start working on my, background, so for the background i need some cool, colored, markers so i think blues and purples, work the best kind of this range of, markers here, and um you're just going to kind of draw, some, swirling lines and basically fill up all, that background space, and you'll notice where ever you've, drawn, your white crayon, it might kind of uh make a light spot, there but that's okay, don't worry about that just draw right, over it i'm not pushing down, hard on my marker because i don't want, to get, that waxy crayon on the marker, make it not work so i'm going to use i'm, going to use more than one color, here and my main goal is to make sure, that i really, filled up the background space with lots, of, lines so i kind of started with these, swirly lines like, like winter wind but now i'm going, through and around my spirals i'm just, adding kind of some short, purple lines the more colors, you get on here and the closer together, the more you fill up the space the, better it's going to look, gonna add in a few more lines, one more color, and then i'm gonna just use a paint, brush and some water, if you don't have a paintbrush you could, use a cotton ball, a makeup sponge even a kitchen sponge, anything that's, soft that you can absorb water with so, i'm just taking some water, with my paintbrush and i'm basically, going to paint, the background and right away you can, see wherever i made my crayon, it's going to show up because this water, will kind of wash the marker, off of the wax and onto the paper, and my goal here is just to blend the, marker enough, kind of make it bleed and blend it so, that i fill all the white background, space on the paper, so i'm just going to keep blending this, until my whole background is kind of, bluish purplish color, and of course all my snowflakes are, showing through, so here are some of the snowflakes i, drew and then of course i, added some smaller circle snowflakes in, there as well, now if you didn't get very many marker, lines on there it might be kind of hard, to spread, it out so when you start if you realize, that you didn't have enough marker lines, you can actually stop and add more, before you do the rest or you can even, let this dry, and do another layer of marker again, later, when the paper is dry and then add more, water and it will just make the, background more, colorful so if you just wanted the, background to be darker, more vibrant brighter colors you could, do a second round of this, after it's dry now i'm going to let this, portion of my paper dry, and i'm going to add a paper snowflake, to the center of my mitten so it looks, like i'm catching a snowflake, so for that part i'm going to need a, small white paper, and some scissors, so my winter mitten is drying and i've, got a small piece of white paper here, it's four inches by four inches, you can certainly use a ruler to help, you measure or ask an adult to help you, cut a paper about this size, it is good to measure it so that it is, perfectly square because we are going to, fold corners together, so i'm going to start by folding two, corners, of my paper together to make a triangle, and i want to fold it at least one more, time, although with paper snowflakes you can, keep, folding them smaller and smaller and if, you, like and the smaller you fold them the, cooler, the patterns look but it also makes it, harder to cut, so i'm going to fold mine one more time, but you don't have to you could just, leave yours folded, twice you want to fold it at least twice, so the trick with paper snowflakes, is that you only want to cut on the, edges, and you don't want to cut, all of this folded edge you want to make, sure that, you can cut into the folded edge and cut, shapes out, but that you don't cut all the way, across because then your snowflake will, kind of fall apart, so i'm going to cut some really simple, shapes because, i did fold mine three times so it's, going to be a little bit tougher to cut, than if you folded yours twice but you, can make different, patterns different designs by kind of, cutting different shapes out, and it also looks best if you cut, your snowflake on all three sides, somewhere, i'm going to stay away from the corners, because i don't want to cut too much, off and you can cut pretty, quite a bit of one side as long as you, don't cut the entire side you want to, leave some parts, that are still attached so see i've got, shapes cut out of all three sides so, when i open, my snowflake i have a pretty, pretty cool pattern here now you can, experiment and make different snowflakes, you can even hang some of these up in, your house and when you get one that you, really really like, we're going to kind of glue it just in, the center, in the middle of your mitten so it looks, like you're catching the snowflake, so for this part i would just add a tiny, dot of glue here, or if you're using a glue stick just put, your glue in the middle, and then kind of hold it down in the, center so that the edges stick up and, you can even kind of bend them, to make it kind of curl and that's the, end then you're finished with your, project

Finished mittens with hand dyed yarn. I used acid dye, with accurate vinegar proportions. Gave the finished mittens a vinegar bath before a light hand wash and then it gave out TONS of blue dye with the laundry soap. What can I do to fix the color further?

This took SO many hours and it isn't even technically the first page... Maybe I should have picked something easier for my first time trying adult coloring, but I've always been ambitious.
