Kirov Class Battlecruiser Russian Navy Warship | Warship, Kirov, Online 34
all right, hi I'm Ryan samanski curator for, Battleship New Jersey museum and, Memorial so you've just gotten your own, Iowa class Battleship and you're trying, to figure out the right way to care and, keep her for as long as possible one of, the chores you should do at least, quarterly is go around and sound your, tanks, now Iowa class battleships have, somewhere between three and six hundred, tanks and void spaces and other things, like that around the ship about half of, them were liquid loaded used for holding, fuel boiler feed water drinking water, just saltwater ballast you name it, uh and then the other half were voids, used for counter flooding if the ship, starts to list because it's been hit by, a torpedo or something as a museum ship, almost all of them should be empty, Battleship New Jersey is very fortunate, in that when the museum was first set up, we had the money from the state to be, able to go through and clean out all of, our fuel tanks, so this means that any residual fuel, that was left in them was gotten out at, that point this is very important, because if something happens and we have, to weld onto say the outside of the ship, where there's a border to a fuel tank, now we know that that tank is clean we, don't have to worry about cleaning it, out so that we we have a fire issue when, we're putting all that heat on the, outside of the shell plating, another issue is ships rot from the, inside out they don't rot from the, outside in, the outside of the ship is well painted, these fuel tanks, who knows when the last time they were, painted was, and there's all sorts of Plumbing that, goes into these tanks for getting the, fuel from fuel connections up here on, Deck I don't see one nearby here's a, water connection right here this, Plumbing runs down the ship, and then as it is filling up that tank, you'll notice the tank also has a j-pipe, next to it that's for the air to escape, well these are not made out of armor, plate we've talked about how the, plumbing fails a thousand times on this, channel, so especially right here on top of the, wood where the water sits you see a lot, of corrosion unfortunately this has all, been treated as we've been laying the, new deck down, but in places where we still have the, rotting wood there that's rotting away, the steel as well which is then allowing, water to get into these tanks and if we, don't sound the tanks to find out what's, in there we could have these tanks, filling up and rusting and US never, knowing it so for us we do this about, once a quarter, when the ship was in service because, many of these tanks held Fuel and we, don't just have a fuel gauge on them, it would have been the job of the runner, of the watch and there would have been, several Runners of the watch on the, battleship to go around and sound these, tanks periodically and see how much fuel, has been used, and that way you know what your fuel, efficiency is and all that we've got, tons and tons and tons of uh fuel tables, for this ship, so I'm going to show you how this, process works both if you were in the, Navy on an old ship like this and if you, have a museum ship of your own or you're, just interested in what we do with our, museum ship so the first thing you need, is a t-handled wrench this wrench is the, key, which opens up the fuel tank, this particular tank I'm opening is, labeled as a 72f, F implies fuel V would be void and there, may be some other letters on there, depending on other types of fluids, and it's specifically a sounding tank, and when I open this up, it is just a whole a pipe that goes, straight down to the tank the the tank, is several stories below us and this one, we can check the chart when I get back, to my office but this one may run all, the way to the bottom of the ship so, let's see today's video is brought to, you by established titles established, titles uses the ancient Scottish, tradition of making land owners a Laird, or lady Lord or lady, by simple Merit of owning property in, Scotland so established titles allows, you to buy as little as one square foot, of property in Scotland, to become a Scottish lawyer Lady this is, a prefix like Mr or Mrs that you can put, on things like your plane tickets your, credit cards and even your dating, profiles that one's my favorite, they send you a certificate like this, one I'm Lord Ryan Mick samanski now, established titles makes a great last, minute gift idea remember the holiday, season is approaching and they donate to, one trees planted and trees for the, future, I absolutely love this environmentalism, about the company remember to use the, discount code Battleship to get 10 off, your next purchase and the first 200, people who purchase will get a plot, right next to mine in the same Kingdom, established titles makes a great last, minute gift and they're running an, amazing sale right now in addition to, our discount code so go over there soon, go to established titles.com Battleship, and use the discount code Battleship to, get your gifts now and support our, Channel and our Museum you need a plum, Bob like this one so it's got a weight, on it and then it's got basically a, measuring tape that we can put down and, this plumb bob is already clean but you, would use a rag to clean the end maybe, the last tank had some water in it you, don't want that to confuse you in this, tank and uh, the weight makes it want to just drop, down, so we play it down until we can feel it, hit the bottom, this is a deep tank, all right you notice that now we lose, tension on it that means we've hit the, bottom, so let's see how deep this tank was, 52 feet and two inches, so this ship has about a 38 foot draft, fully loaded and then the main deck, around the midships is about 20 to 25, feet high and of course it gets much, higher at the bow so so this one goes, practically to the bottom of the ship, probably about six feet from the bottom, because there is a triple bottom under, us now it's worth mentioning that these, are on the exterior main deck however, these things are all over the ship like, I said they're somewhere between 300 and, 600 of them I'm not counting all of, these, um, and and some of them are on the interior, of the ship some of them are several, decks down some of them are up here on, the main deck I don't think there's any, in the superstructure but don't quote me, on that, um, also worth mentioning right now, that our maintenance department does, this, um I do not do this all the time there, seems to be a fair number of people out, there who think that I do absolutely, everything on the ship and I like to, think I know how to do everything on the, ship but there just aren't enough hours, in the day we've got an excellent, maintenance department and they run, around and do these soundings every, quarter and uh if they find any variants, in them then we work together to figure, out well what Plumbing is going into, that tank that could have leaked what uh, could the issue be how do we solve this, all right so let's crank this up and, it's all dry so far worse paper cut in, my life was from one of these number of, years ago when I was the maintenance, person, uh not on New Jersey but on uh a, different ship, so something to keep in mind if you're, caring for your own Iowa class, battleship, worth pointing out a couple of these, tanks are difficult to sound because the, pipe has rotted out so because there's a, hole in it the plumb bob gets stuck in, it on the way up we had to climb down in, a tank I think it's been over a year now, because the the plumb bob got cut and, they basically just disattached it and, dropped the whole tape down and bought a, new one, um, but we were able to recover it, fortunately it was a tank that was a, void and had been tested Fair also worth, pointing out because our tanks were, cleaned around the year 2000 they were, all left open for ventilation from that, point on, so, most of these tanks are gas free both, literally they don't have any gas in, them in terms of fuel and figuratively, they are safe to go in but we do have a, monitor we use when we're going into, these tanks all right so yeah we've got, some moisture on this one, uh, and let's check our, chart here yep uh, we're supposed to have about a foot of, standing water in this tank which is uh, what we're seeing here so that's perfect, it means that the level hasn't changed, any, While most of our tanks are empty we do, keep some fresh water ballast in a few, of these tanks to keep the ship trim, make sure she's not leaning too hard to, one side or the other and do you want to, know what my first indication is when, the ship is leaning, it's what my office door does when I, open it in the morning, if it stays stationary it means that, we're probably pretty level if it swings, open or closed it means that we've had, some trim issue overnight and we gotta, go out and sound and see what happened, there, uh so there's some really easy, indicators for that sort of stuff now, let me clean this off before we do our, next sounding uh so, in some instances the trim issue is, because we've taken on water it's never, been outside water, it's always been rainwater coming in, from a pipe that's wasted out or, something like that but we've also had, issues because we added new macro, artifacts to the ship when we added the, helicopter on the starboard side we, started to tip this way when we added, the 40 millimeter gun and the captain's, boat to the port side we went the other, way and we had to put water in a, starboard side tank to level it out some, of it is just I have a class battleships, are not balanced if you take all of the, stuff off of the ship except what's, attached down the ship will ride about, 10 feet higher in the bow because of all, of the weight of armor around the, steering gear at the start of the ship, and because it's a much wider space and, it will tilt a little bit to the, starboard side because they've got the, refueling King post and some other, things added on the starboard side and, nothing on the port side they're, asymmetric now another important thing, is some people seem to think that these, are good souvenirs so especially in our, encampment spaces seems like some of the, Scouts have taken a fair number of these, so it is always worth, cranking these down when you're done all, right so we've looked in this tank we, have found that there is liquid in this, tank let's go look at what this tank is, and how we can figure out how much water, that is so what does it mean that, there's a foot of water in this tank, so sometimes what the Navy does makes no, sense but sometimes it makes perfect, sense the Navy does have a fair amount, of experience with ship handling and and, maintaining old ships so the system we, use at this point is very similar to the, Navy's own, system so I've got one of the DC plates, here which shows all the various Fuel, and water tanks around the ship, uh and it's it's even color-coded to say, what should be in it so this uh orange, back here is the jp5 storage tanks uh, the yellow and green uh Stripes along, the outside here uh yellow is fuel green, is sea water so when it's two of them, yellow and green together that means, that as you're using the fuel you're, refilling it with water not only does, this form part of the torpedo defense, but also it is the ballast that keeps, the ship trimmed now while we're talking, about trim uh I up above I mentioned the, low-tech way if my door doesn't swing, the way it did yesterday something is, different, there are also a couple of high-tech, ways but high-tech official ways there, are draft marks at the balance turn of, the ship, so when we are doing this we're also, recording what the draft marks are so we, know if we come in one morning and the, draft marks are significantly deeper, then we've got a water intrusion issue, or somebody's put a lot of heavy stuff, on the ship without us knowing it the, other thing we have is a clinometer, which is uh like a wide u-shaped thing, with an air bubble in it that'll tell us, how much we're listing it's best for a, museum ship to be kept listing about two, degrees to one side we do this, intentionally because the ship is, designed to be at sea and when rain, water lands on the ship the ship's, moving at Sea will cause that rainwater, to shed into the deck drains if we are, sitting perfectly still permanently, moored like Museum ships are there are, low spots that don't have deck trains in, them where water will just sit so if you, make this ship angled a little bit to, the stern a little bit to one side about, two degrees then that allows that water, to drain and run, so most Museum ships will do that you, won't see a perfectly level Museum, because that's that's bad for the, long-term preservation if you can, believe that so uh back to our thing, we're looking for tank a 72f this is the, sheet I keep in my office that I have, all the tanks that in some cases the, tube broke, uh so I've just got them circled here so, we know where they are so we can go and, find them that's a winter project uh, during the summer we're outside painting, the ship during the winter it's too cold, to do exterior work the paint won't set, so we come inside the ship and do our, work uh so I've got a couple areas where, the tube is broke or where soundings are, showing a little bit of variance which, means that it could be more water, getting in there or, something else is going on so these are, all things that we'll inspect in the, upcoming months so I just keep this, throughout the summer and then during, the winter we'll go through and we'll, fix them the Navy uses a laminated sheet, so that you can write on it with a, grease pencil in theory you can also do, it with a dry erase marker but I've been, using a grease pencil here, so looking this up a means that it's in, the forward third of the ship, and uh so sure enough we have a 72f, right here that is its World War II name, so that's how it shows up on most of the, blueprints and things like this chart, here which we'll get to in a second but, this is a 1980s damage control plate so, it also says that that compartment's, modern name is, nine which means it goes all the way to, the bottom of the ship 83 the frame, number and four that it's pretty far, outboard on the port side and then F, fuel so a72f and 983 4f are the same, space, I'm going to write down there that we, had uh, one foot three inches in that tank, I did not have that listed here, so now we've got that written down so, the next thing we do is well how much, water is a foot and three inches in this, tank, so, this is the ship's original tank, capacity tables so this says exactly how, much fluid is in those tanks so whether, I'm a sailor on this ship during World, War II has who's just sanded that tank, to see how much fuel is in it or I am, a uh a curator of a museum who's doing, this I can now come to this tank and you, get a table like this, what the heck does this mean so this, column is the number of feet, and this column is the number of inches, so we've got one foot so I'd come down, this column to this point and three, inches so come over here, and that gives me, 979 uh gallons of fuel, so is that a lot, no no the rated capacity for this tank, is uh 13, 350 gallons and the rated capacity is 95, percent of full capacity you never full, fill the tank up to a hundred percent, because in heat or cold weather that, fluid will expand or contract so you, don't want to fill it up to 100 with, water go somewhere where it's freezing, uh have that fuel or that water freeze, and then water expands when it freezes, so now it pops the manhole cover off and, gets in the inside of the ship which is, somewhere where you don't want water, so, we know that 900 almost a thousand, gallons is uh nowhere near full capacity, I think it's like five percent of the, total capacity of the tax so, we don't have any immediate issues this, winter we'll go through there we'll see, and where might this water be coming, from uh it's also worth pointing out, that we get a fair amount of water, inside the ship that is condensate, because the inside of the ship is air, conditioned the outside of the ship is, cold water, so we have found water in tanks it's, like hey there's nothing here leaking, uh it's condensate you pump it out and, you're good for a decade or two before, you start to get any significant, condensate in there again in our case, Mike very based on climate, so the final step is to using those, plans go through and find where access, to the tank is, so on New Jersey many of our tanks are, accessed through offices like this one, where there is a manhole cover which, we've unbolted and removed remember part, of the ventilating these spaces and as, soon as I go through there there's, another manhole cover in the deck that's, the one for a72f and there's also access, to three other tanks further forward if, you go through there you can go up, um, so I'm not going to climb down in that, tank today, uh we'll we'll do some tests on the air, down there just to confirm we'll get, some extra people here to spot us maybe, if there's something worth seeing in, that tank sometime this winter will, release a follow-up video and talk about, we went in there and what we found and, how we dealt with it Battleship New, Jersey receives operating support from, the New Jersey Department of State also, from a number of other businesses and, private individuals like yourselves the, support allows us to go through and do, these sorts of checks that help us, maintain the vessel for as long as, possible today's video is sponsored by, established titles remember they're, having a huge sale right now and you, also have a discount code Battleship, through Battleship New Jersey it, supports both them and our Museum so we, can continue to do work like this, there's a link to them in the, description below go check it out and, you can
